Kombo Yiriwa Kafo (KYK) is a non-profit organization established to advocate for the interests of the Kombo region of The Gambia, and its diverse residents.
Our diaspora branch is incorporated in the U.S. state of Washington and granted 501 (c) (3) exempt charitable status by the Internal Revenue Services, IRS, of the United States of America.
We operate independently of any political or religious affiliations, ensuring our mission focuses solely on community development and cultural preservation.
Our primary mission is to actively pursue and protect the rights and interests of the people of Kombo. We aim to foster a spirit of unity and collaboration among the residents, with a particular emphasis on empowering the youth. By creating strong networks and opportunities for engagement, we hope to inspire the younger generation to fully and meaningfully participate in and contribute to the mainstream social, economic, and political development of the country.
.
Our pledge is our commitment to the well-being and welfare of every person and community within the spectrum of Kombo.
Our purpose involves the commitment to facilitating and implementing development projects that benefit communities across Kombo. These projects focus on key areas such as education, healthcare, environment, sustainable agriculture, and infrastructure to improve the overall quality of life of our people. By doing so, we not only enhance individual potential but also work in partnership with the government to achieve a sustainable and prosperous future for Kombo.
We encourage our youth to participate in meaningful development activities, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to contribute positively to their communities. We engage in various initiatives that promote and revitalize the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Kombo, ensuring that these vital elements are preserved and celebrated within the community. Together, we strive to realize the Kombo we want, where every resident can thrive and contribute to our shared vision of progress and unity.
We value honesty and transparency in all our engagements, ensuring trust and accountability to our stakeholders.
We pride ourselves in advocating for the rights and freedoms of the people and communities we serve, raising awareness, and driving change.
We embrace our social, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversities and strive to create an environment where every voice feels heard and every individual matters and is valued regardless of their background.
We strive to empower individuals and communities through collaborations with VDCs, government and non-governmental organizations by providing the services and resources needed to thrive as a community.
We cherish the stewardship of our natural endowments, sea, land, forest, culture, and other vital human and economic resources, and we pledge our commitment to responsible and sustainable stewardship for future generations.
We are committed to serving our communities selflessly, prioritizing their welfare while demonstrating compassionate care. Our goal is to make a meaningful and positive impact on the well-being of those we serve.
Our organization began with a thought-provoking conversation among colleagues within the lively offices of the Dabanani Electrical Company in Kanifing. This initial dialogue, orchestrated by Alhagie Conteh from Gunjur, quickly garnered the enthusiastic support of community leaders like Fabura Jatta from Nyofelleh, Yusupha Cham of Sukuta, Folonko Bojang of Jambur, and Sulayman Jabang also from Gunjur.
Driven by a shared vision, they presented the proposal to the Alkalolu (Village Heads) of various towns across Kombo, establishing an engaging dialogue that resonated deeply within the community. The response was overwhelmingly positive, paving the way for the formation of a new organization dedicated to enhancing the welfare and well-being of the people residing in Kombo.
As discussions progressed, the first formal meeting convened in the serene setting of Brufut in February 2017. This gathering laid the groundwork for what would soon blossom into a fully-fledged organization. Through collaborative efforts, the articles of incorporation and Constitution were meticulously crafted and adopted, solidifying the framework of the Association, which was officially registered in June 2017. The momentous inauguration of the KYK took place on October 7, 2017, led by former Vice President Fatoumatta Jallow-Tambajang in a ceremonial event held in Brikama. In a remarkable act of support and commitment, Mr. Alhagie Conteh generously offered office space for the Association at the Dabanani Electrical Company in Kanifing, becoming its main financial sponsor during its formative years and helping to shape its impactful trajectory.
